Bees Drop Rain-Delayed Heartbreaker
Burlington, IA - A 77 minute rain delay halted a matchup between the Alton River Dragons (16-16) and the Burlington Bees (8-26) after the fourth with the Dragons leading 3-2 .
Alton went on to stage a two-out rally in the top of the ninth to break a tie, going on to win 7-4.
The River Dragons began the game with three runs on one hit in the first inning to put the Bees in an immediate hole. Burlington committed one error in the frame.
The Bees eventually broke through in the fourth. Keanu Spenser (Queens University of Charlotte) and Cooper Donlin (Hawaii-Pacific) led off with singles. Donlin's on-base streak is extended to 23. Cedric Dunnwald (Mt.Mercy University) smashed an RBI double into left field to make it 3-2. This got him to 7 RBI's on the year.
Jackson Wohlers (Rock Valley College) got the start and tossed four innings. He allowed two hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
The delay began after the fourth and Chase Golden (Western Illinois) resumed on the mound. He would toss a trio of shutout innings. He finished at 3.1 innings, letting up one earned run.
Burlington went ahead in the seventh in a mini rally. Jeremy Figueroa (Mt.Mercy University) doubled to lead it off. Landon Akers (Bellarmine) followed with a single, his on-base streak is up to 19 games.
Figueroa tied the game when Akers stole second and the throw got away from the Alton infield.
Akers did not stop there. He stole third and scored on another throwing error by the Alton catcher to make it 4-3.
Alton tied the game in the eighth, before scoring three in the ninth to make it 7-4. Burlington left five on base over the last two innings.
Alton reliever Scott Detweiler received the win and Jack Duncan (Western-Illinois) picked up the loss.
Burlington attempts to bounce back tomorrow in game one of a two game set against the Thrillville Thrillbillies (1-5). First pitch is at 6:30 p.m in Where's Waldo Night at Community Field.
