Theriot Jr. Tosses Second Straight Shutout In Start To Give Burlington Victory
Burlington, IA - David Theriot Jr. 's (Texas-Wesleyan) transition to starter has been nothing short of magical.
The three-year Bee tossed his second straight six or more inning shutout, giving the Burlington Bees (8-26) a 5-0 victory over the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (10-21) at Community Field July 6.
Theriot Jr. allowed four hits and struck out four over 6.2 to get the victory. He moves to 2-1 on the season.
After beginning the year in relief, he started his third game tonight. He went two innings in his first start back on June 23, since then has tossed 13.2 straight shutout innings, all of which have come against Springfield.
Burlington's scoring came right out of the gate. After a first inning where Theriot Jr. got out of a bases loaded nobody out jam, the team would hit through the order.
Landon Akers (Bellarmine) walked to begin the festivities, extending his on-base streak to 18.
Akers advanced to second on a wild pitch. Corey Boyette (Heartland CC) singled to score him and put Burlington on the board. Boyette has 10 RBI's in as many games.
Boyette reached third on a fielder's choice that allowed Cooper Donlin (Hawaii-Pacific) to get to first. Donlin's on-base streak is up to 22.
Skyler Agnew (Hawaii-Pacific) stayed red hot with an RBI single. He has three RBI's in the same amount of games to get to 15 on the year.
Jackson Lindquist (Rock Valley College) walked to load the bases.
Nick Meyer (Mt.Mercy University) walked a run in. That was his 10th walk and 11th RBI of the year, as the Mt.Mercy product finished one for three.
Springfield's Manager Brad Gyorkos was ejected for arguing balls and strikes by home plate umpire Dana Wilson.
The Bees tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The rally started on back to back singles from Lindquist and Meyer. An infield error allowed Akers to reach and load the bases.
Bryce Brown (Mt.Mercy University) smashed a double to deep center field to score two, but he was thrown out at second. Brown was the only Burlington player with multiple hits, finishing two for four. He has three RBI's in his first three games with the team.
Joe Evans (Morton College) relieved Theriot Jr. in the seventh. He slammed the door shut, tossing 2.1 shutout innings with five strikeouts and a hit allowed. Evans is one out short of 30 innings on the year.
Burlington had no errors and stranded seven Lucky Horseshoes on base.
The Bees moves to 2-3 in the second half and returns to action July 6 in a matinee matchup against the Normal Cornbelters (3-3) at 2:00 p.m. It is Local Hero's Day at Community Field, with all emergency responders getting into the game for free who show valid identification.
