Burlington Allows 10 Over Two Innings To Drop Rubber Match
Burlington IA - The Burlington Bees (7-26, 1-3) surrendered runs in bunches, as the Clinton Lumberkings (19-12, 4-1) posted both a four and six run inning to secure an 11-3 win at Community Field July 5.
This was the third game between the two teams over the same amount of days. Clinton moves to 1-6 against the Bees this season.
Jacob Zahner (Southeastern CC) made the start. After an eight pitch first, the Lumberkings scored four in the second. His final line was three innings with four walks and earned runs allowed.
Clinton's starter Jack Surdey let up two earned runs over six innings to receive the win.
Both of Surdey's earned runs came in the first inning when Bryce Brown (Mt Mercy University) took his first Burlington hit over the left field wall to make it 2-0. It was his first hit in his second game with the team.
Burlington had four hits in the inning but stranded one on base. Clinton did not take any chances, as it put four on the leaderboard in the second to make it 4-2.
The Bees pulled within one in the fourth on a one-hit rally. Keanu Spenser (Queens University of Charlotte) led off with a single and advanced to second on an error.
He went to third on a groundout and a wild pitch allowed him to score as the scoreboard read 4-3.
Clinton tacked on one in the fifth to bring its lead to two. A Carson Bittner (Phoenix University) hit by pitch and Jace Figuereo (Southeastern CC) single put the tying runs on with one out in the bottom of the frame.
The Lumberkings not only got out of the jam, but scored six in the sixth to take an eight run lead. These were the last runs of the game and put it out of reach for the Bees.
Jimmy McCarthy (Morton College) and Zach Leuschen (Southeastern CC) pitched three combined innings between the third and sixth and allowed six earned runs.
The brightspot of the pitchers came from Michael Schaul (Mt.Mercy University). He tossed three shutout innings and allowed one earned run with two strikeouts.
Figuereo and Spenser were the only Bees with multiple hits. Cooper Donlin (Hawaii-Pacific) had a one for four day to extend his on-base streak to 21.
Burlington had seven hits, left four on base and registered one error.
The Bees dress in speciality jerseys in Black Water Mini Golf Holey Moley Night at Community Field July 6. The opponent is the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (10-20,2-2), with first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
