Bees Lose Home Slugfest

Burlington, IA - In a game of bats, the Burlington Bees (5-12) could not keep up, losing a 17-9 slugfest to the O'Fallon Hoots (12-7) at Community Field June 18. The Bees are 0-4 against the Hoots and move to 5-5 at home.

O'Fallon led 6-5 after two frames. Merrick Mathews (University of Iowa) registered three RBI's in the five runs. Mathews finished three for six with a run and the hat trick of runs batted in.

O'Fallon scored one or more runs in every inning all the way until the seventh. Burlington plated three on no hits in the bottom of the sixth, but this was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Boston Halloran (Oakland University) had three hits in five plate appearances, with a run scored and an RBI. Jackson Reid (Chandler Gilbert CC) tallied a pair of hits.

The Bees finished with 12 hits, 12 left on base and committed five errors, while allowing their most runs in a game this season. The Hoots also had three errors in a sloppy defensive effort by both sides.

On his birthday, Erik Kiewiet (Mt. Mercy University) shined on a tough day for the Bees pitching staff. The birthday boy went two shutout innings, letting up no hits with three strikeouts.

Burlington attempts to put this game behind them, as they travel to Peru, Illinois June 18 to take on the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp (12-6). The teams will resume a game that was suspended due to rain with a Burlington 11-10 lead in the top of the fifth at 5:05 p.m., before playing another matchup at 7:05 p.m.
