Mathews Walk-off Caps Off Back and Forth Victory
Burlington, IA - Merrick Mathews (Iowa University) launched a walk-off blast into the
Burlington sky, as the Burlington Bees (2-3) completed a four-run comeback, beating the Illinois
Valley Pistol Shrimp (3-3) 11-9 in a ten-inning nailbiter.
Every Burlington starter registered a hit, as the Bees trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth.
The team rallied with six runs in the sixth inning, tied the game in the eighth, and eventually won
in the tenth.
Five pitchers took the mound for the Bees. Noah Harbin (Maryville University) started and went
three innings, allowing three runs. Zach Leuschen (Southeastern CC) followed him with two
innings of three hit, shutout ball.
Joe Evans (Morton College) was the hero on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings to
anchor the bullpen, including stranding the bases loaded in the seventh and two runners in the
tenth.
Landon Akers (Bellarmine) finished with three hits and RBI's, delivering the game-tying hit
both in the eighth and the tenth.
Nick Meyer (Mt. Mercy University) had a pair of hits and RBIs, including a single in the bottom
of the sixth that scored two to pull the Bees within one run.
Jackson Lindquist (Rock Valley College) had two RBI's, which were the first two for Burlington.
Cooper Donlin (Hawaii-Pacific) scored three times on two hits and Cedric Dunwald (Mt. Mercy
University) also finished with a couple of hits.
Mathews' game winner was his first hit as a Bee and was the final blow to snap the team's
three-game losing streak.
Burlington will play at home June 3 against the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (1-3) at 6:30 p.m.,
before heading on the road at the Clinton LumberKings (3-0) June 4 at 6:30 p.m.
