Burlington Celebrates a Walk Off Win Over Cape Girardeau

Bees Walk Off Cape in 11

In a pitcher's duel that stretched over five hours, including a 1 hour and 40 minute rain delay, left fielder Kevin Santiago stroked a line single to left scoring Oscar Ponce from second to give the Bees a 2-1 victory over the visiting Cape Girardeau Catfish.

CJ Lewis was stellar in relief for Burlington.  He twirled six innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk while striking out 3 to earn his first win of the year.  Bees' starter Jared Townsend was equally impressive.  The lefty went five innings, giving up 2 hits, walking 6 and striking out 5.  He gave up no runs.

The Catfish used five pitchers highlighted by 6.1 innings from Eli Brown.  He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while giving up 2 walks and striking out 7.  Griffin Lohman started for Cape.  He threw 15 pitches before the rain halted the game and did not return when it resumed.

In the top of the eleventh Cape's Jackson Jarvis reached on a wild pitch while striking out.  He moved to second on another wild pitch.  With one out JD Ortiz walked on yet another wild pitch, putting runners on first and third.  Kolton Poorman drove a sacrifice fly scoring Jarvis.  Cape took a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Dante Zamudio, in his second inning of relief, served up a monster home run to right off the bat of Spencer Nivens, tying the game.  Oscar Ponce followed with a ground single to right.  Ryan Grace was called upon the pinch hit, and was promptly plunked by a Zamudio fastball.  That put runners on first and second for the Bees.

Kevin Santiago ended the night with a line RBI single to left, which the Texas Wesleyan junior ran out into right field as he was mobbed by his teammates.

Lewis earned his much deserved first win.  Zamudio took the loss to go 1-1.
